Birds of
a feather flock together…
The
work of the World Parrot Trust
Bearing its name in mind, it’s probably not surprising
that Macaw Soft Drinks makers of H2, support the World Parrot
Trust charity. As well as keeping an eye on our feathered friends
on our own shores, the World Parrot Trust funds projects and
promotes excellence in parrot conservation and welfare on a
global scale.
Since it was founded in 1989, the World Parrot Trust has funded conservation
work for 37 different species in 22 countries including Australia, Brazil, Mauritius
and South Africa. Its main aims are:
- to
maintain the survival of parrot species in the wild
and the welfare of captive birds everywhere
- to
restore and protect populations of wild parrots and
their native habitats
- to
promote awareness of the threats to all parrots, captive
and wild
Parrots are paramount
As well as campaigning to stop the importation
of wild-caught birds into the European Union, the World
Parrot Trust is
currently watching the welfare of
12 other species of parrot: African Grey, Blue Throated Macaw, Echo
Parakeet, Golden Conure, Great Green Macaw (Buffons),
Lear’s Macaw, Moluccan Cockatoo,
St Vincent Amazon, Thick Billed Parrot, Red-throated Lorikeet, Palm
Cockatoo and the Imperial Amazon.
The World Parrot Trust works tirelessly to prevent the extinction of species
worldwide. Success stories include that of the Great Green Macaw in Costa Rica
and Nicaragua, where the World Parrot Trust has created a Great Green Macaw
Conservation Fund and raised over $20,000, and the Imperial Amazon, whose survival
rate is being maintained with the help of a new National Park in Dominica in
the West Indies, contributed towards by The Trust.
